The Nockberge mountains have gone to sleep under a thick blanket of snow, now and again the spruce trees shake the fresh powder snow from their arms and it smells of winter. It's nice to have enough TIME to pause and enjoy the magic of winter, especially on a winter hike.
Many kilometers of cleared winter hiking trails run through the Millstätter See - Bad Kleinkirchheim - Nockberge region, past untouched slopes, through idyllic valleys, around sleeping bathing lakes and through snow-covered forests. Even off the slopes, people like to stop for a bite to eat. Sometimes it is the village inn that lies along the way, often a cozy hut where the large tiled stove warms up the winter hikers.
Sturdy shoes on your feet and warm clothing - that's all you need. The snow crunches under your boots on the quiet forest trails and romantic lakeside walks. Admittedly, you can plan a little more time for the route when winter hiking. Take breaks to breathe in the winter air, have a snowball fight or whizz downhill on a toboggan.
