The gently undulating hilltops are reflected in the emerald-green lake water. Swimmers swim their lengths, and water sports enthusiasts are out and about on their SUPs, canoes and sailing boats on the lake. Lake Brennsee is a popular summer destination and is known for its reliable thermals, which sometimes leads renowned surf magazines to mention the small, fine bathing lake in the same breath as the Italian surfer's paradise of Lake Garda.

My bathing spot at Lake Brennsee

Once upon a time, the angry Mirnock giant is said to have split the large lake in the Gegendtal valley in two. One is Lake Brennsee, the other is Lake Afritzer See, which is just a short walk away. The partially unspoilt shores of Lake Brennsee offer many opportunities for a dip in the lake. One particularly attractive one is on the northern shore at the Biker-Lounge (Seestraße).

It is used by bikers after a descent on the single trail, but also by hikers travelling around the lake to take a dip. You can get a real summer feeling by jumping into the lake from a SUP or boat. Both can be hired at the lake. There are also two free lake access points on the 3.5 kilometres around the barely built-up Lake Afritzer See.

Fishing and angling in Lake Brennsee

‘Dagobert’ was the name of the huge pike that was pulled out of the Lake Brennsee, measuring a proud 141 centimetres and weighing 18 kilograms. In addition to pike, the lake is home to a dozen other species of peaceful and predatory fish. The tasty whitefish, as well as tench weighing up to 4 kilograms, are much sought after by anglers. By the way: Lake Afritzer See can also be fished with a fishing licence issued by Kärnten Fisch, the fish farm in Feld am See.

Once known as ‘Obersee’, Brennsee was only sparsely populated. One of the first houses to be built in 1632 was Haus Brenn, an inn with its own schnapps distillery. It is thanks to this that the Obersee became the Brennsee. Today, Brennsee is also known to some as Feldsee.

The lake is 1.3 kilometres long and 500 metres wide. Its basin is filled with 6,274,453 cubic metres of water.

Lake Brennsee is 26.3 metres deep at its deepest point. Its average depth is 15.4 metres.

Yes, a stable layer of ice usually forms on the Lake Brennsee during the winter months, which can also be used for ice skating and ice hockey if it is thick enough.
