Amidst rolling hills, blossoming alpine meadows and sweeping views across Lake Millstatt, one of Carinthia’s most delightful regions unfolds. Mountain huts here invite you to pause and take a breather – with regional cuisine, simple wooden tables and an atmosphere that helps you unwind.
The region around Lake Millstatt, Bad Kleinkirchheim and the Nockberge Mountains is one of the areas in Carinthia with the highest concentration of alpine huts. The choice ranges from huts serving food and drink along the Nockalmstraße to secluded alpine pastures in the UNESCO Carinthian Nockberge Biosphere Reserve. This page provides guidance on places to stop for refreshments, the location and special features of the alpine huts in Carinthia.
Many alpine huts in the Nockberge Mountains have been run for generations. The blend of alpine farming, craftsmanship and regional cuisine has remained alive here. Guests are served classic alpine snacks, tangy cheese, fresh buttermilk or hot dishes, the recipes for which are deeply rooted in the region.
It is precisely the intimate scale of many of these huts that fosters a sense of closeness: to the landscape, to the people and to a form of enjoyment that requires no pretence.
Cheese is still made today at selected alpine pastures around the UNESCO Carinthian Nockberge Biosphere Reserve. Cream cheese, alpine butter, Glundner cheese and the typical Harber Kas are produced right on site or in the immediate vicinity of the huts. These products are not mere accompaniments, but the very heart of the alpine experience. They reflect the altitude, the season and the craftsmanship – and make every stop along the way truly unique.
Tip: Regional specialities are available all year round at the Kaslab’n Nockberge in Radenthein.
At many alpine huts in the Nockberge Mountains, regional specialities are an integral part of the experience. The tangy Harber Kas, made from curd cheese and salt, is a typical accompaniment to an alpine snack – crumbly, full of flavour and closely linked to traditional alpine farming.
Equally deeply rooted is Zirbenschnaps: the young cones of the Swiss stone pine are used to create an aromatic classic, traditionally served in alpine huts for a toast. Both epitomise what makes alpine enjoyment in the region so special – simple, authentic and unmistakable.
There are numerous hiking trails and selected cycle routes in the region that lead directly to mountain huts serving food and drink. The journey itself is part of the experience, with gentle climbs, open alpine meadows, shady forest paths and sweeping views across the Nockberge mountains.
Many huts are situated in such a way that they can be easily incorporated into leisurely hikes or relaxed bike rides.
Along the Nockalmstraße and around Bad Kleinkirchheim and Lake Millstatt, there are numerous alpine huts in Carinthia that are easily accessible – some via the Summer cable car, directly by the Nockmobil shuttle or by car, and others via short hiking trails.
At the same time, the Nockberge Mountains are home to deliberately secluded huts that focus on tranquillity, panoramic views and unspoilt nature.
Although summer is the traditional season for alpine pastures, mountain huts remain a highlight of the calendar well beyond this time of year. In late summer and early autumn, the alpine pastures take on a more subdued palette, accompanied by crisp air and sweeping views.
Many huts are also open throughout the year and invite visitors to stop for a bite to eat even outside the peak summer season.
