Baldramsdorf, just a few kilometres west of Spittal an der Drau, was the centre of the powerful county of Ortenburg for almost 200 years. The possessions of this county stretched from the Celtic-Roman capital of Teurnia to Lower Carniola in present-day Slovenia. This rich historical past and the immediate proximity to the Drau river still characterise the charm of the village today.

My summer holiday in Baldramsdorf

Cyclists travelling along the Drau Cycle Path like to make a stopover in the municipality of Baldramsdorf. It's worth allowing a little extra time, not only to explore the fascinating Ortenburg ruins or the Paternschloss castle, but also to discover the bee nature trail or stroll along the banks of the Drau. Many have already made their first attempts at fishing at the Goldbrunnteich pond. Baldramsdorf is also an ideal starting point for hikes or an e-bike tour on the Goldeck sports mountain.

My winter holiday in Baldramsdorf

From the Goldeck cable car valley station, it takes around 15 minutes to reach the Goldeck sports mountain. 25 kilometres of pistes of all levels of difficulty are waiting to be explored. Children can take their first steps on skis in the Kinderland, while pros can make their turns in the freeride area. How about a snowshoe tour or a winter walk to the Marhube high above Baldramsdorf? The inn is very close to Ortenburg castle. A dinner in the glass dome combines panoramic views with pleasurable moments.

A castle and a palace

Around 1136, Otto I initiated a period of lively building activity in Baldramsdorf with the construction of Ortenburg castle. The castle once extended over 2.7 hectares and was the largest castle in Carinthia with around ten towers and numerous buildings. Earthquakes and storms left their mark over the centuries, and at the end of the 18th century the castle was left to decay. Below the castle, in the centre of Baldramsdorf, Emperor Frederick III had Ortenburg Castle, also known as Paternschloss, built in the 14th century. Today it houses the 1st Carinthian Crafts Museum.
