A few hundred years before Rome was founded, the area around today's Lendorf was already a place of good living. The Drau, the fertile fields on the valley floor, forests and water sources and, last but not least, the convenient location make the area a suitable place to settle. Nothing has changed over the centuries, but thanks to its rich history and a special botanical feature, there is plenty for visitors to discover in Lendorf today.

The Romans and the "Yellow Alpine Rose"

1600 years ago, the capitol of the Celtic-Roman city of Teurnia was enthroned on the "Holzer Berg" in Lendorf, which at times was even the capital of the Roman province of Noricum. Today's excavations on the mountain are an integral part of the Teurnia Roman Museum. Marble sculptures, jewellery, weapons, coins and much more tell of the society, everyday life and art of days gone by. Probably the most important find in Teurnia is the famous mosaic floor from around 500 A.D. With its striking depictions of animals, the mosaic reflects the world of thought of the early Christians. Perhaps it was the Romans who brought the "Yellow Alpine Rose" to Lendorf. It is not known for sure. But the fact is that the "Rhododendron luteum Sweet", known as the "miracle flower of Lendorf", thrives magnificently at the foot of the Hühnerberg. All attempts to plant it elsewhere in Austria have so far failed.

My summer holiday in Lendorf

Hikers with large rucksacks rest by the wayside before continuing their tour along the Alpe-Adria-Trail over the Hühnersberg towards Gmünd. Those who prefer to cycle can cycle to the Maria Hohenburg filial church and stop off at the Kolmwirt on the Hühnersberg. From here, the view extends as far as Lake Millstätter See, which is also just a few kilometres by bike from Lendorf. A day of swimming in one of the lidos or a boat trip will enrich your summer holiday in Lendorf. If you are travelling along the banks of the Drau, you are sure to meet cyclists on the Drau Cycle Path. With a bit of luck, you might even catch a glimpse of a crayfish in the Drau floodplains.

My winter holiday in Lendorf

This is a view of the snow-covered summit of the Goldeck. This sports mountain boasts a 50-hectare freeride area, the Goldeck Snowpark and the Kinderland, where the ski stars of tomorrow are professionally supervised. The Mölltal Glacier, Katschberg and Bad Kleinkirchheim ski areas are also easily accessible from Lendorf. The Gmeineck high above Lendorf is a popular ski touring mountain in winter, and the winter hiking trails in Lendorf invite you to take long walks through the village.
